Chummin’ right up, a Thursday full of shark cage diving.
A very early start today with Dream Catcher the first boat out on anchor in the Shallows with about an hour wait for the first shark to appear and when it did everyday was excited to see it was a big White shark! The morning progressed with some periods of quite as the sharks came and went as they pleased. Things really started to slow down on with the White shark sightings around midday however the Bronze Whalers were out in force and provided some great shark sightings into the afternoon with the White sharks returning later on and the Bronze Whalers only coming by when they thought the coast was clear of the larger shark species. The Whites that we saw today included the smaller sized but attitude rich male in the bay Mini Nemo, three of the larger females we have been seeing frequently over the last two weeks including the one with distinctive black scars to the dorsal fin, the one with a bite scar on the right flank and the one missing the upper lobe to her caudal fin, however one new addition to Gansbaai’s current toothy fish was seen late in the afternoon, a individual just over the 3.0m length and absolutely covered in darkly pigmented scarring, on closer examination of photographs what appear to be scars from bites. We hope to see more of this shark over the next few days.
