Gearing up for the weekend we were keen to get sharky this morning! We were not disappointed on our first trip, with 5 different copper sharks giving us some fantastic close cage action. Our cage divers were treated to some excellent passes, and jumped back on board Slashfin very happy with their sightings. An added bonus on this trip were the humpback dolphins travelling past us! These guys were in a pod of around 4 and just cruising through the calm waters this morning. A very nice treat for us all. As we were just about the pack up and leave, the skipper spotted the distinctive silhouette of a white shark just off the side of slashfin. This shark gave us a quick pass by the cage and then moved onwards.
With our spirits high after a successful first trip, we were very keen to get back on the water. As soon as we’d tied the cage to the side of the boat and suited up, the white shark was back! This 3m white shark appeared to be a female, and she’s a very clean shark, with very little scarring. The copper sharks were back in their droves again after the white shark moved on, but with the second cage in we had the same white shark pass by the cage a few times again! Another marvellous trip on the water with 7 copper sharks joining the party too!
On our third trip we had to wait a little while for the white shark again, but while we waited the copper sharks gave us plenty to look at. Around an hour into the trip the white shark popped out of nowhere to say hello to everyone in the cage!! This happened to be one of our well known White sharks, actually one of our ten Marine Dynamics Iconic White sharks, Mini Nemo. The last time we documented this male now estimated at 3.4m in length, was back in mid April just before our shark sightings plummeted due to what we believe to be Orcas moving through the bay and targeting White sharks for their livers. We are very happy to see Mini Nemo back and looking so well whilst also exhibiting the same behaviour we are accustomed to seeing with this animal, determined, fast paced and exciting movements. Welcome back Mini Nemo, what a fantastic way to end a successful day!
