Marine Dynamics Blog

Our amazing news

Have you heard that white sharks can detect faint movements like a single fish swimming in the distance or even a heart beat? This shark fact blog checks out what exactly a shark’s sixth sense means…

Today offered some amazing shark activity at Dyer Island, the only downside today was the decrease in visibility from yesterday. This was attributed to the presence of large phytoplankton blooms in the water; these blooms are a vital part of the marine food web. However it has a negative impact on our visibility in the water, but luckily no impact on the shark activity! We had an interesting sighting of a shark covered extensively in parasites. Even though these animals often have internal and external parasites, this particular shark was riddled with them. “Zane” made a very abrupt pass and disappeared into the depths and left room for other sharks to make their passes. See you tomorrow…

Those subantarctic skuas have been adopted by Marine Dynamics it would seem, because they are waiting for us every morning. They are a real pleasure to watch in the way that they escort us out of the harbour! We had some great sharks today, west of Dyer Island, with two of them being larger than 4 meters. Each cage had several close passes and there were several opportunities for photos from the deck. We even had some guests all the way from Jamaica to come and visit us and no they did not bring any brownies on board, I think :)! A real nice day it turned out to be…

It was once again the Subantarctic Skuas duty to escort us out to our dive site, however today he really came very close! We were kept waiting a bit today but the end result was worth it! We had several large sharks make their passes by the cage and there was even a large 4 meter female coming very close. She seemed intoxicated in the way that she just floated pass the front of the cage, an amazing shark she was! “Slash Fin” made another short and dramatic appearance for the clients and impressed them with his 4.7 meter body! It just started to rain so our trip was timed perfectly, great stuff team…

The subantarctic skuas got our clients filling up half their memory cards even before we saw any sharks. These birds are always awesome in the way that they fly so close to you, that you could almost touch them. Conditions at sea were very pleasant with relatively calm conditions. The sharks were slightly less calm in the manner they pursued the decoy today. Quite understandable because of the sheer number of sharks around the cage! Even though there were so many sharks, we were very surprised to see a young seal brave the waters in search of a play mate. He can consider himself very fortunate that the sharks preferred our seal decoy over the real thing :)! A Cape Gannet was also very lucky to have caught a massive fish in front of the boat, it was unlucky in the fact that it was too big to swallow :)! The day was truly blessed with an abundance of shark activity as well as a flurry of nature’s splendour! Keep it up…

We had an ‘exclusive’ trip today with very few clients on board, this made the trip even more special. This gave me the opportunity to interact with each person and get their feedback on their experience with the great white shark. The sharks were a bit slow initially, however that changed very quickly with one shark giving rise to a further five. All of these sharks have been in the area for a while because we have grown familiar with each individual as well as their personalities! It was another successful trip…

We had a very constant flow of sharks today, with each cage having an abundance of shark sightings! We had three massive sharks making their presence known; the largest being “Slash Fin” at 4.7 meters! The other two were both good 4 meter sized sharks, it was a day of giants! Even though we had a couple of rain drops fall during the trip it was a very nice day to be on the water with amazingly calm conditions. The guests on board were equally entertaining! A great way to spend a Thursday…

Winter is clearly on its way, even though it was sunny there was a clear chill in the air! This was however no deterrent for the sharks who arrived on schedule. “Slash Fin” made a very dramatic appearance today and it would seem he is getting bigger and bigger every day, seal meat is the way to go if you want to bulk up :)! It would seem that more and more newlywed couples are sealing the deal through shark cage diving. Congratulations guys and I hope to see you soon again with the new additions to the family! A very special day…

As another action filled day comes to an end it brings me great joy to see how much respect people have gained for the Great White Shark, once the trip comes to an end! This fact was brought even more to my attention just by the visit that was paid to us by one of the journalists from 50/50. It is great to see that these animals are getting the respect they deserve. We were also very lucky to get a view of the “Shark Men” boat which was anchored in the bay; a truly spectacular vessel. We saw some amazing sharks as well as some box jellies which I find to be always weird looking! What a day…

It was a frenzy of sharks around the boat yet again! We were treated with an amazing spectacle of shark acrobatics which offered several jaw dropping moments! We had several massive sharks with the biggest being 4.6 meters in length and they just kept coming! The conditions did increase later on in the afternoon with the swell getting the best of some; however they were all very happy to see the sharks up close. The sightings have truly been spectacular and we hope that it carries on like this for a long time to come! Keep up the good work sharks…
