Sunday morning is a time of rest for many people, waking up late, enjoying the last day of the week however no such thing happens around here with our first trip launching at the bright and early hour of 7am yet it was not just the Marine Dynamics team and our guests that were up and at ‘em this morning but the White sharks as well. The previous three days of slow activity had made us anxious but within 20 minutes of anchoring the tip of a fin was seen breaking the waters’ surface just behind the boat, this shark proceeded to make its’ way closer but not before a smaller White shark beat it! Out of nowhere appeared a tiny juvenile female, approximately 2.2m in length, the smallest of the trip was the first to give our guests a real glimpse of a White shark before disappearing as the larger, more active, 3.5m female appeared. This trip continued like so, with sharks coming and going, sightings pretty consistent throughout and some absolutely stunning behaviour from some of the more bold sharks. Many of the individuals we saw this morning were new sharks to the area for this season, a fantastic indicator that even though things have been slow recently the White sharks appear to still be entering the bay.
The second trip of the day launched and had a bit of a wait for the sharks to arrive. It just goes to show how quickly things change with nature, after all this is wildlife we are dealing with. The group showed great patience and with time and a few anchor changes their luck changed and two different White sharks were seen this trip, both juveniles and ones we had seen earlier on in the day. The Short-tailed stingrays were also present during this trip, gliding up to the surface before disappearing again.
On our third trip we moved our anchor in order to maximise our chances to get a glimpse at our white sharks today, and it paid off! We had some spectacular action from the 2.8m female from the second trip, giving our cage divers some excellent close up action. We were also joined by the copper sharks as well, out in force and ready to check out Slashfin! Another super day in the spring sunshine.
