A very early start to the weekend with our first trip of the day heading out in glorious conditions at 6:30am this morning. We were the second boat on anchor and with a short wait we had our first Copper shark around. With time more joined to the point where we estimate approximately 4 different Copper sharks to be cruising around the boat. Whilst enjoying the views of the Copper sharks it became apparent that one of the seven boats out on the water had a White shark, Slashfin, it’s crew and guests were invited out to that boat’s anchor site and within moments we had a White shark the first to be seen in 2 days. It was Mini Nemo, one of our Iconic White sharks, a estimated 3.4m male that we have been able to identify since 2012, and easily so due to the stunted right pectoral fin that as earnt him his name. Mini Nemo was with us for much of the rest of the trip, taking his time to come up and approach the boat and cage. We headed back to the harbour, after inviting in one of the other boats to our spot in the hopes that they too would have a successful trip.
The second trip of the day launched and from the get go Mini Nemo was around. Doing his usual sneaky thing, coming and going from our sight. Mini Nemo did a disappearing act and the Copper sharks then approached, moving nicely around the boat and cage for sometime. Towards the end of the trip a second Great White approached! This was a female shark we have been seeing on and off for the last few months, always around before and after we experience periods of nil White shark activity and easily identifiable by the frayed tip to the dorsal fin.
A fantastic Saturday out on the water!
