Trip 1
The clouds were clearing and the rain slowing down by the time we headed out onto the water this morning. Once on anchor we had close to a 30 minutes wait for the sharks to arrive but within minutes of the first showing up we had another three very close behind. The smallest shark of the trip was an estimated 2.5m, juvenile know to us as “Dolphin Fin” due to the curved tip to the dorsal fin, an animal that became part of our biopsy study in 2015. The largest shark spotted this morning was approximately 4.0m in length, with quite a few large White sharks around the boat, a fantastic sight especially when this time of the year w are more prone to seeing the smaller sharks. We also had a Short-tailed stingray glide up from the depths throughout the morning.
Trip 2
The second trip of the day headed out and had a shark around very soon after arrival back in the Shallows. Things then got a little quite as the Short-tailed stingray showed up and it was an hour before the next shark arrived. The sharks that visited during this trip were most of the ones that we had seen previously in the day on the first trip, including “Dolphin Fin” and some of the larger males, with yet again a shark close to 4.0m in length joining for the afternoon.
