Wakey wakey shark cage divers! The sharks are ready and waiting! After having several sharks around yesterday, we were very hopeful for today’s sightings as we ventured out to sea. We hoped that the sharks would be around a bit sooner than yesterday, and we were in luck. Within 40 minutes our first shark was spotted in the distance, slowly cruising towards our vessel. It was a massive 5 meter long female with an injury on the trailing edge of her dorsal. We are unsure as to what may have caused the injury as it is not something we commonly see on the sharks. Fortunately, sharks have amazing healing capabilities and the wound should hopefully heal without complications. It was soon followed by a 4 meter long female that we’ve seen around a lot lately, whom is missing the upper lobe of her caudal fin, then a 4.5 meter long white shark with no distinct markings other than a few small scars along its side. The average size shark on trips can be usually between 2 to 4 meters, so to have 3 sharks on one trip all 4 meters and longer was a real treat. As we began our second trip, it was clear that there were several sharks in the bay today. Before wetsuits could even be passed out, a juvenile white shark approximately 2.3 meters long approached the boat. It didn’t stay around long, which was found to be understandable when the largest white shark that I personally have ever seen (others on our crew have seen bigger) swam up to the cage. She was a massive 5.5 meter beauty with a wide girth and jaw dropping grace. We also had a visit from a 4 meter white shark with a scar on the top of its head and a very clean and dark 4.8 meter white shark. The big female returned at the end, giving everyone an amazing sight of her entire body as she lunged out of the water, chasing the seal decoy. What a sight to see!! To finish off the day we had some amazing sightings on our third trip. We started off with three of our well known females, two that were content on cruising past a few times but one, with a bite scar on the right side, making some impressive attempts on the bait and decoy line and getting nice and close for us. We also had two small juveniles, both of which were a little a shy, maybe due to the two larger sharks that took our shark count for the afternoon up to seven. This included a 4.5m clean female and the whopping 5.0m female from the first trip with the damage to the trailing edge of her dorsal fin.
