Conditions: Great conditions with little to no swell and very slight wind wth clouds disappearing.
Little swell and slight winds are not something we experience around here too frequently but today was one of those days where the bay wsa flat with just a slight breeze blowing to keep things fresh.
The bay was alive with wildlife today with sharks, penguins and dolphins spotted from our shark cage diving vessels. The African penguins, which call Dyer Island home in the area are most likely to be spotted by our vessels if they are out on the water and thats exactly how we saw them this morning, a small raft of penguins half way to our anchor site.
The dolphins that were seen were actually two different species, first a small pod of Bottlenose dolphins cruising through the Joubertsdam, perhaps chasing fish through the shallow water and later on a smaller group of Humpback dolphins on the way back to the harbour, named so due to the distinct hump to their dorsal fin, this is a semi-residential species to the area.
The sharks that were seen on all of our trips today were the Copper sharks aka Bronze Whaler aka Narrow-toothed shark. Bit confusing with all the names found all over the world for this species but easily recogniseable after a while by the lovely bronzed dorsal surface colour, rounded tip to its’ snout and elongated upper caudal lobe. We had a few shyer, smaller individuals spotted today but also some larger bolder animals, willing to get nice and close for our guests to see!
