Picture this…12 months ago we were all excited to be informed and witness ourselves that there were two Orca in the bay, individuals we had not seen since October 2015 and even more interesting was that this was the first time we had documented this species coming so far into the bay and close to our shark cage diving vessels. Fast forward a year and the idea of these two male Orca in the bay stirs quite a few uneasy thoughts and emotions for the White shark team at Marine Dynamics and with other companies as 2017 proceeded to be the hardest year to date with many weeks without any White sharks sighted after the Orcas were found to be hunting them for their livers (refer here to previous timeline for more information). Of course with anyone involved in the industry and anyone with a passion for this species we hoped that what we were experiencing would be temporary, a short-lived period of shark scarcity before things got back to normal but as we sit here, a year to the day, having experienced no shark sightings what so ever for today’s trips, we wonder exactly what the future holds, we wait for our White sharks to return, something we are hoping with all hope will happen as we leave the historically low season that summer is and head into the time of the year that White sharks are known in the past to be more prevalent. Only time will tell…
