We launched this morning with the sun peeking through the clouds and white caps speckled across the sea from the wind. As we anchored we wondered if today’s trips would be as lucky as yesterday. Immediately a shark was spotted, and we knew that despite the choppy seas, today would be a good day.
We had visits from a cousin of the sharks, a short-tailed stingray. Rays and sharks are related, and anatomically they are very similar, however rays are a flattened-out version of a shark, so I like to call them pancake sharks. This one came up and investigated our bait line then disappeared as quickly as it appeared.
It was a great day for shark sightings, with half a dozen or so copper sharks visiting our boat and even a white shark for our first trip of the day! The copper sharks stayed around for quite some time, coming close to the cage, giving everyone a great look. The white shark was a bit sneakier, only coming by 4 times, each time, trying to sneak a bite at the bait line as he cruised by. He is an estimated 3.2-meter-long male that we saw yesterday, with no unique markings to ID him other than his pale colored skin. We hope that he and other white sharks continue to visit the bay and we look forward to seeing what tomorrow has in store for us!
