Trip 1
This morning’s conditions were perfect on the water, were the sharks going to be just as good? Once on anchor we patiently waited for a shark to arrive and within 30 minutes our first one came rocketing in. This was “Mini Nemo” a male approximately 3.0m in length with his right pectoral fin stunted. He was by far the most energetic of the trip with many sneak approaches on the bait and decoy lines leading to above water views. We also had another male crusie into sight, just a little larger than “Mini Nemo” but not as active and one that did not stick around long. The third and final shark of the trip was again a male but much larger, approaching the 4.0m length and sporting a SPOT tag as deployed by Ocearch in 2012. This was “Sellendilloh”, a White shark we last saw in August of 2016 at the end of our Winter season around the Islands. “Sellendilloh” was tagged in Gansbaai on the 12th of April, 2012 and his tracks have found that he migrates up and down the African coastline, as Northen as Mozambique waters. More information on this shark and the tracking data can be viewed on Ocearch’s website here.
Trip 2
The second trip of the day saw a move of anchor right at the beginning of the trip after conditions changed and we sought a better positions in the bay. Once on our new anchor we saw a White shark cruising just behind the boat however this would not approach closely until later on in the trip. The first shark to show up nice and close was a large male with many seal scratches on his snout and with some very calm and curious behaviour. This shark approached the area slowly and was happy to get up close and personal allowing everyone to have a nice look. Unfortunately this shark left soon after our first cage and we had two juveniles, the male we had seen behind the boat on arrival and a female that was not interested in sticking around. This two came and went not sticking around long at all however towards the end of our trip “Sellendilloh” yet again found us making for a fantastic end to a great trip.
Trip 3
The third and final trip of the day saw the sharks arrive close to 20 minutes after the boat did. The first shark was “Sellendilloh” the male White shark with the SPOT tag attached to the dorsal fin, on which more can be read about above. The second shark turned out to be the curious male from the previous trip with the many seal scratches and as not to miss out “Mini Nemo” also reappeared for the last trip. A trip dominated by the male White sharks much like the earlier trips of the day
