Our first trip this morning saw us head straight to the shallows! We were first on the water and with the cage tied up we soon had our first copper shark around slashfin eager to get eyes on our first cage divers. With no hesitation we got in the cage and witnessed four individual copper sharks glide by the cage and check us out. All of our divers today got a great deal of facetime with these sharks and it was great to see them up close. We had a nice ride back to Gansbaai harbour this morning due to low tide in Kleinbaai, so that was a bit of a bonus!
For our second trip today it didn’t take long for out copper friends to show themselves again, and this time we even had a short-tail stingray join us around the boat. Excitement was high and our divers jumped in the cage and had an absolute ball with the copper sharks! It’s really great to see that these sharks are sticking around in the bay at the moment!
The third and final trip of the day launched and those Copper sharks were at it again, showing up quickly and causing a stir for our guests on board. Whilst the first cage was in enjoying the sight of Copper sharks swimming towards them our skipper and decoy handler started making a fuss at the side of the boat, with the rest of us hearing White shark being repeated again and again, we all wondered if they were mistaken or just making a terrible joke however within minutes the unmistakable dark shadow of a White shark was seen at the back of the boat. The first White shark we have seen since last Monday, a male approximately 3.5m in length and with some very slow and interesting behaviour. He stuck around for a few passes before heading down our chum slick and did not appear for the rest of the day. The Copper sharks and Short-tailed stingray kept things going for the rest of the trip before heading back to land. A fantastic way to finish the day and start the week.
