This mornings trip had some what of an eerie feeling to it as we left the harbour with nothing in sight but fog! This fog lifted about 30 minutes into the trip to give us a view of the beautiful mountains surrounding this bay and Dyer Island off in the distance. We had a bit of a wait this morning, you could feel the anticipation building on the boat and just when everyone seemed to be distracted a tip of a dorsal fin was spotted and a large shadow made its way in! It was “Ingrid”, a large female shark that we got to know well and nicknamed in 2014, welcome back “Ingrid”. This shark was first to arrive and last to leave and was responsible for the wows coming from our divers. We also had some smaller individuals around, three of which had a pass or two before leaving and one which came in whenever “Ingrid” wasn’t around to dominate with her size! Those on board this morning were also lucky to see our research vessel “Lwazi” in action as they took biopsy samples from Great Whites to use in research related to behaviour, genetics and toxicology. The second trip began on a calm note as we left Kleinbaai harbor around 12pm with little wind and a slight swell. We had a smooth ride out to the dive site, which took around 10 minutes. We had two sharks arrive at Slashfin fifteen minutes after attaching the cage to the side. Unfortunately, they didn’t stay around for too long. We had two other sharks visit the cage with the largest being an impressive 4.0 metre female! Unfortunately we work with nature and it is unpredictable as the current brought red tide algae around the boat, which removes oxygen from the water preventing sharks from swimming in the area. Overall it was a fun day and we can’t wait to see what tomorrow holds…
