Trip Comments:
An early morning start today for a group of Italian researchers and students. They are joining us to have a closer look at the behavior of the white shark. They have been doing once a year for the last ten so it was nice to welcome them back for their second year with us. The managed to get a biopsy from the first shark we spotted today. Some other great news is that Fishing Line shark is back! This is a shark that had a fishing line caught around her head back in January 2013. We managed to catch that shark after getting the permits from the government. We were able to take the fishing line off and 7 minutes after catching the shark we released it. We didn’t see it for some time but when we spotted it again in June 2013 we were very glad to see that the shark was doing well. The scar left behind by the fishing line is fading and she has also grown in size compared to the last time we saw her. The swell started to get bigger as the day proceeded but the sharks were still around for our second trip. We spotted many big females including Malcom and Ingrid. Malcom pulled off quite a show with some impressive breaches while she tried to get the bait. The Fishing Line shark paid us another visit and we ended up seeing 11 different sharks. Kelly got excited as a crew member said he saw Jacob coming up for the decoy. We are however disappointed to announce that this was a false alarm. We had a look at the dorsal fin pictures of that shark and did not see any resemblance in the picture we took today and a picture taken from Jacobs’s dorsal fin a few months ago.
