Trip 1
Rise and shine shark cage divers it’s time to go try and find some of those elusive White sharks! The first group of visitors on board Slashfin had a very early start this morning but our White sharks were ready and we were lucky enough to have sharks as our divers were finishing up with getting their wetsuits on. This was “Sellendilloh” the current shark in the bay to be sporting a SPOT tag, that is a global tracking device that allows monitoring of the animals horizontal movements and migration patterns. This male tends to stick close to the South African coastline and migrates up as far north as Durban and back down to the Cape region. More information and the tracking data for this shark can be found on the tagging party, Ocearch’s website here. “Sellendilloh” was closely followed by a smaller three smaller sharks that did not stick around however our next arrival did with one of our favourite males “Mini Nemo” showing up. “Mini Nemo” is well known and easily identifiable by the stunted right pectoral fin which earned him his name and also by the fantastic activity he displays around the boat. The rest of the trip was dominated by “Mini Nemo” with a few juveniles also appearing and one of our previously tagged females “Paisley”.
Trip 2
The second trip of the day launched to some increased winds causing some chop on the water, yet these conditions did not hinder our shark activity and the first shark to appear was a wowzer of a female, just over 4.0m in length she is one we have seen around before but is not a frequent visitor to the boat, however she stuck around for close to 30 minutes today coming and going from view as she pleased before a large male made his entrance. This male was “Tum K”, named after one of our skippers on board Slashfin, he can be easily identified by the rolled tip to the dorsal fin. During the afternoon we also saw “Sellendilloh” and a few other sharks however “Mini Nemo” stole the show again and was by far the most active shark of the trip and indeed the entire day.
