Trip 1
An early start for our first group of shark cage divers this morning with a 7am launch. The group headed into the Shallows and only had a 30 minute wait for the sharks to arrive. The first shark was one just over 3.0m with the upper lobe of it’s caudal fin missing. Once the first shark had arrived many more continued to be seen include “Nala” a larger female we have been seeing for the last few weeks, “Pieter” our previously tagged and biopsied male and “Feisty” one of our recently tagged sharks. The trip ended with a drive around Danger Point to Gansbaai harbour as the tide in Kleinbaai harbour was too low for our boat to enter.
Trip 2
The second trip of the day began from where the first ended with a launch from Gansbaai harbour bak around the point and into the Shallows to our waiting cage. “Nala” was spotted nearly immediately after arrival with “Pieter” also returning for this new group to see. A new addition was our small but playful female “Gigi” and a large male.
Trip 3
Slashfin made it’s way back out of Kleinbaai harbour for the third and final trip of the day. This trip started off slowly with a shark spotted almost instantly which then moved away leaving us shark-less for 20 minutes before new sharks started to show up. This trip was dominated by the smaller juveniles with “Gigi” a stand out. It wasn’t till near the end of the trip that some of the larger sharks came to the surface with “Pieter” yet again cruising through and a large female just under 4.0m making an appearance.
All three of our trips were also lucky enough to see another species of shark, the Bronze Whaler or Copper shark, a smaller species with a stunning dorsal surface colour of a light bronze in which it gains it’s name.
