Slashfin, her crew and guests had a later start this morning with the tide only allowing us to launch at 9am. We headed into the Shallows and on to anchor to play the waiting game. The last few months have been interesting and very difficult here in Gansbaai with sightings nil or none however the last 12 days have seen sharks slowly coming back through the area.
Today’s morning trip was much like yesterdays’ trips with much patience needed, however patience and the right mindset goes a long way with wildlife and our group had a sighting after approximately 1.5 hours.
This shark was a female we first set eyes on yesterday, approximately 3.8m in length, she has an injury to her caudal fin or tail like that of another female currently in the bay “Scarlett” however is a little smaller, lighter in dorsal surface colour and has none of the other identifying scars we see on “Scarlett”. This female made a few passes every now and again and popped her head above the water nicely as she made an attempt on the seal decoy.
The second trip had a shark around quite quickly and this was in fact “Scarlett”. This shark is one of our ten Iconic White sharks and is amazing to see around the boat with slow passes and a liking for spy hopping or putting her head out of the water, interested to see what is going on at the surface and above.
The third and final trip of the day launched late afternoon and was greeted with a shark sighting not long after they were back on anchor, this 3m paler white shark stayed deep in the water and treated us to some lovely passes. We had a brief sighting of a Copper shark as well so that was pretty epic too!
