Slashfin was the first boat out on the bay this morning, with the area to ourselves for a little while we had our first shark within 15 minutes of anchoring. This was a juvenile male just under 3.0m in length and one we have seen frequently over the last few days. He stuck around for sometime, coming and going as he pleased. We had to other juvenile White sharks visit throughout the morning trip, both small females including “Dolphin Fin”, who was biopsied in 2015 by the team at Dyer Island Conservation Trust for genetic, behavioural and toxicology studies. The other three sharks to appear were all approximately 3.5m in length and included two males, one with the tip of it’s dorsal fin bent over that we refer to as “Floppy” and another that was active whilst around but soon disappeared. The other was a large female, one whos dorsal fin we recognise, she made some very impressive passes by the cage and attempts on the decoy and bait lines.
The second trip of the day started off well with sharks present almost instantly after the boat arrived back on site. The activity continued throughout the trip with new sharks appearing consistantly. This included some of the sharks from the first trip such as the feisty juvenile male and larger male with floppy dorsal fin. There was a interesting new addition to this trip however with a large male seen with a fresh propellor wound on the left side of it’s trunk towards it’s tail. Whilst White shark’s are very resilient animals and heal magnificently we still hope to be able to keep an eye on this injury.
