What a day to start a new week off with! The sky was clear and bright and the day warm as we headed off early from Gansbaai Harbour. The trip around Danger Point revealed some of the other wonderful marine life that the area has on offer with multiple sightings of Southern Right Whales. The morning continued to get better and better with sharks arriving quickly once we were on anchor, both White sharks and Copper sharks and a few Short-tailed stingrays appeared throughout the trip as well. The sharks seen this morning were two females we have gotten to know well over the last 12 months named ‘Sarko’ and ‘Taryn-it-up’ measuring in at approximately 3.0m and 3.5m in length. ‘Sarko’ has been a nearly daily sighting around Slashfin, our shark cage diving vessel, however today was only the second sighting of ‘Taryn-it-up’ for this season. The other two White sharks seen throughout the trip were both small juveniles appearing interested in the happenings but not too keen to stick around. A fantastic trip to start off the day.
The second trip of the day launched with the same fantastic conditions and like the first trip had little time to wait till the first shark was spotted. Furthermore, like the first trip, White sharks, Copper sharks and Short-tailed stingrays all approached the boat for the guests of Marine Dynamics to enjoy viewing. The White sharks that appeared for this trip were ‘Sarko’ again and two new additions for the day including a female similar in size to ‘Sarko’ as well as bearing similar scars and the same feisty attitude. There was also a larger female, estimated just under 4.0m in length that made a stop by the boat.
The third and final trip launched and whilst the sky started to cloud over the conditions were still fantastic to spend the afternoon out on the water. We had a plethora of shark action on this trip, with 7 copper sharks, 4 white sharks and 3 stingrays. We even had copper sharks surfing over white sharks! Our white sharks included, the 3.8m female with a fresh gash down her right flank, as well as 3 small females all around the 2m mark. We had a really pale small female that we saw on the first trip as well! A Jawsome day alround!
