With low lying clouds above, Slashfin launched this morning into some of the flattest seas we have seen in a while. It was eerily calm, with very little movement on the surface, at least for a little while. It didn’t take long before there were some sounds of splashing and we had our first shark at the boat! There are times that we can wait hours with absolutely nothing coming around except kelp gulls, however today was not one of those days. Shark sightings were consistent with very brief periods of waiting, wondering if these beautiful copper coloured creatures would return. We were lucky enough to even have a small shark pop up as we were about to leave, as if to say goodbye to everyone. The sharks we saw today ranged in sizes from 1.4 meters to 3.0 meters long, all highly curious and stunning to see. Our first trip was also blessed with a sighting of a large female Cape Fur Seal who popped up about 10 meters from the boat, did a couple of circle spins and underwater somersaults, then took off again. It was almost as if she was teasing everyone to come join her for a swim! Our second trip also got to see a Cape Fur Seal swimming around in front of the cage! It’s always nice to be able to show everyone the diversity in our ecosystem and we hope that everyone onboard enjoyed the day with these intriguing species as much as we did.
