Trip 1
We headed out early this morning after two days off due to some bad weather conditions with the hopes that the sharks were still around and happy to visit us as much as we were to see them. Once on anchor in the Geldsteen we had our first shark after a 20 minute wait, with a juvenile female turning up closely followed by a juvenile male. This mornings trip was dominated by the juveniles with four out of our six sharks being under the 3.0m length, however towards the end of the trip we had two sub-adults join in the fun. One of these larger animals was a female and the other a very well known male, “Sellendilloh”, both well known as he has some fantastic behaviour around the boat and also because he has been tagged and tracked all along this coastline after Ocearch attached a satellite tag in 2012, more of which you can learn about on their website here. We also had a little bit fo seal cage diving today with a Cape Fur seal turning up and ducking and diving right by the cage, behaving as if it had no issue with the predators currently swimming near by! Due to tide constraints we headed around Danger Point and into Gansbaai Harbour rather than our usual Kleinbaai Harbour to end our trip.
Trip 2
The second trip launched and made its’ way back around to the Geldsteen where we encounted our first shark approximately 30 minutes after re-anchoring. This was one of the sharks we saw on the first trip, followed by a very small White shark only about 2.0m in length. Whilst this little shark was the smallest of the day it also appeared to be the most playful as it moved quickly around the boat showing a lot of interest in our seal decoy. It was towards the end of this trip that the big sharks turned up with our last three sharks all being near or over the 4.0m length. These sharks were impressive in size and also had some fantastic activity. We also had a Cape Fur seal turn up on this trip which proceeded to tail a White shark, of course the tail is a lot safer to be behind for these sea lions then the other end of the shark!
Trip 3
The third and final trip was an exclusive for a visitor from the United States. The sharks were around the boat from the get go with many of the previous trips’ White sharks appearing again fo the afternoon. The trip ended with a cruise through Shark Alley to see the Cape Fur seal colony on Geyser Rock.
