This morning we were escorted by a Sub Antarctic skua to our dive site. These birds visit us during winter and like to fly alongside the vessels. After we dropped the anchor we have been once lucky again and had sharks after a few minutes. At first the sharks didn’t come up to the surface but we still could see them swimming pass the cage. Later on ‘Mini Nemo’ approached the boat and was a bit more surface active then the sharks before. In total we encountered nine different Great White sharks with the biggest one estimated to be around three and a half meter. After seeing these apex predators up close we were heading to the world famous Shark Alley to see the Cape Fur seals, the most favourite pray for the sharks.
The second trip of the day began with one of our acoustically tagged animals from 2016 approaching the boat, this juvenile female spent some tie cruising around before disappearing as another juvenile White shark appeared that did much the same. The third shark to arrive was a large female that we started seeing around Slashfin since the sharks reappeared in the bay after their 23 day absence in February. She measures in at approximately 3.6m in length and was one of the most active shark of the trip and was around for most of the trip. “Mini Nemo” and “Gray” also appeared this afternoon and made a lasting impression on our guests along with the large, active female.
